Who's it for?
8th - 12th grade
How it works
Our partners at SkillsLine have developed an "Essential Skills" framework that aligns with 30+ career-ready skills across 5 core competencies based on what employers, colleges, and community leaders tell us are the skills they look for in an ideal applicant.
This course teaches students the first of those five core competencies: self-agency.
Self-agency is a feeling of ownership over our actions and their consequences, and a belief in our ability to take action to accomplish our goals. We build confidence while building character, developing our sense of control and care for ourselves, and for those around us.
This Essentials course breaks down the core competency of self-agency into its most fundamental and actionable behaviors, which each serve as a theme for our 10-minute micro lessons. Students simply conquer each new challenge in the order they are presented, developing and applying their self-agency as they go.
Why this course matters
Self-Agency is one of the most essential, transferable skills in the future world of work. It’s a feeling of ownership over our actions and their consequences, and a belief in our ability to take action to accomplish our goals.

Finding Your Purpose with Ikigai - FAQs
Ikigai definition: what is ikigai?
The concept of ikigai comes from Japan. There is no literal English translation for the word ikigai, but if you split it in half, the word “iki” translates to “life” and “gai” means “worth.” So, you could say that ikigai is your life’s worth. Some people say it’s your reason for being, others say it’s your purpose in life. At Everydae, we like to say that your ikigai is what makes your soul smile :)
What does CHIL mean?
CHIL is an acronym created by Everydae. It stands for Commitment, Happiness, Impact and Leadership. It was created based on our years of experience in the college and graduate school admissions consulting industry. We use the CHIL acronym as a framework to help teenagers develop a personal growth strategy for high school that prioritizes their intrinsic passion over external pressures. It’s the ultimate framework for building a strong college application profile.
How to find your ikigai
You find your ikigai by exploring the intersections of what you love to do, what you’re good at, what the world needs, and what you can be rewarded for. Your ikigai is not a checkered flag in your future. It’s not a destination. It’s a journey. It’s what you do each and every day that brings you the most joy. Take our Ikigai & CHIL course and we’ll guide you toward your ikigai.
How to pronounce ikigai
Ikigai is pronounced ee-kee-guy. It's cute right? We think you can’t help but smile when you say it :)
What is the ikigai diagram?
The ikigai diagram is a westernized interpretation of the Japanese philosophy of ikigai. Basically, it conveys that your ikigai lies at the center of four introspective questions: What do you love to do? What are you good at? What does the world need? What can you be rewarded for?
Is there an Ikigai test?
No. There is no Ikigai test. At least there shouldn’t be. Your ikigai is your own. There is no right or wrong in ikigai. That said, there are ways you can explore your ikigai (which we cover in our course), but again, there is no standardized ikigai test that we are aware of. And anything claiming to be one should be viewed with healthy skepticism.
Can adults take this course too?
Yes, definitely! We get this question all the time. While our Ikigai & CHIL course was designed for high school students, adults can also learn a lot from the experience.
